2021. New year. New opportunities. New challenges. New experiences. And hopefully less drama. Time will tell.
Did you make New Year resolutions? Have you already tossed them to the curb? A few years back I started identifying a Word of the Year instead of New Year resolutions. Resolutions seemed to just fade almost as quickly as I’d dreamt them up. Setting a Word for the year was much easier to maintain. A Word of the year acts as a guide throughout the year for decisions, goals, plans and daily actions. Your Word serves as a constant reminder of the priorities you set for yourself in the beginning of the year.
Don’t worry it’s not too late to set a Word of the Year. Better yet, if you are a person who likes variety, why not set a Word of the Month and switch things up monthly. There are no rules here. It’s all about rooting yourself in visions of who you want to become, create or accomplish throughout the year. Keep reading for my list of Word of the Year Ideas to inspire your choice!
My word of the year for 2020 was: ACCEPTANCE. At the first of the year I wrote an Instagram post announcing ACCEPTANCE as my Word of the Year and writing “Here’s to peace and acceptance of all the things I cannot control. Grateful for my little family and my faith that God has a plan for everyone. Happy New Year friends!!” Hindsight is truly 20, 20 now isn’t it? I had no clue how powerful that word, Acceptance, would become throughout 2020.
For 2021, I choose – INTENTIONAL. My hope is that this word guides me to act intentionally when it comes to my family, my friends, my blog, my business, my self-care needs and living out my Faith. Being intentional, for me, means making a conscious effort to live in the moment more, being purposeful with my time, creating clarity in the results I expect to achieve, and deliberately making time for self-care.
Need some inspiration for your Word of the Year? Here’s a free PDF list of 90+ words to get you started. I suggest you browse the options, think about each word and what it means to you, narrow the options to a short list (less than 5), then think more on what each remaining word means to you before you decide on just 1. Remember, there are no rules, so if you can’t narrow it down, pick 3 for the year, or pick 1 for each month (that gives you 12 words to live by!).
Once you pick your Word, write it down, take a picture of it, and save it. You could even use it to motivate you to write a personal mission statement for the year. Now get going on choosing your Word of the Year! Let us know in the comments which word you chose. It will serve as inspiration for others!
