It’s Wednesday. Mid-week. After a holiday and a tropical storm. I REALLY did not want to fold the laundry today. I emphasize REALLY because truly I never want to fold the laundry. But today, for real, I did NOT want to fold the laundry. It put me in a mood. Not a pleasant one. But as often is the case when I need a good reality check, a thought of my mom popped in my head. I pictured her folding the laundry as she often did on the couch. And then just like that, perspective hit me like a big ole bus.
Bravely, in her 20s, my Mom literally moved across the world to start a new life with my Dad not having any clue what to expect. She left her family, friends and life as she knew it to come to a country she’d only seen and heard about in the newspapers or on TV. She didn’t speak the language. And she knew only one soul, my Dad. As for me, I’ve never lived outside the state of Florida. Ever.
Loyally, my mom worked full-time for over 30 years in a job that was way below her intellect simply because she wasn’t born or educated in this country. I rarely heard her complain except maybe about the alarm clock. She made the best of every situation, could make strangers laugh and lived the epitome of “happiness is something you create.” As for me, I didn’t last more than 15 years in my law career before making a change. Complained the better part of the second half of my law career. And well, when it comes to making the best of every situation let’s just say I’m a work in progress.
Joyfully, my mom created an amazing childhood for me AND kept the clean laundry flowing. So, today, I think I can manage to fold the freakin’ laundry. PERSPECTIVE. It’s priceless. Thanks, Mom!
